Project Overview
Pro AV Systems recently completed an impressive audio visual installation at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), upgrading the Harrington Auditorium with video production and streaming capabilities. The centerpiece of this upgrade is a new video production streaming system, designed to enhance the live broadcast and recording of athletic events, ceremonies, and other activities held in the auditorium.

Key to the installation is the BirdDog PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras strategically placed to capture every angle of the action. One camera is mounted end-court for dynamic full-court coverage, while another is positioned on the balcony apron, providing an elevated perspective. To ensure durability and longevity, the balcony camera is housed in a custom-designed protective enclosure. These cameras, leveraging NDI (Network Device Interface) technology, integrate seamlessly with the network infrastructure, allowing high-quality video transmission over standard ethernet cables without the need for additional video cabling.
In the auditorium’s control booth, Pro AV Systems installed a rack-mounted Broadcast Pix switcher, equipped with advanced capabilities for live video production. A desktop control surface allows operators to switch sources, mix video effects, and control the PTZ cameras with precision. The switcher features built-in live streaming functionality, enabling WPI to broadcast events directly to online platforms. Additionally, an internal SSD provides single-source recording, ensuring reliable and high-quality archives of every production. A new 27-inch desktop monitor displays the multi-view output from the switcher, giving operators a comprehensive view of all live video feeds.
To further enhance usability, Pro AV Systems integrated a new desktop touch panel programmed to mirror the functionality of the existing auditorium touch panel. Beyond replication, this updated interface includes advanced audio controls, allowing operators to mix audio sources directly into the production switcher. This ensures seamless synchronization of video and audio, delivering a polished final product.
