Friday night lights are about more than just the game. They represent energy, community, and connection that bring people together for a shared experience. At one Massachusetts high school, however, the athletic field audio system wasn’t fully delivering the atmosphere these events deserved.
The field’s audio system struggled to meet expectations. Announcements lacked clarity, music failed to carry across the space, and communication between staff, referees, and spectators remained inconsistent. As attendance grew and events became more dynamic, the school recognized the need for a reliable, high-performing outdoor audio solution.
To elevate the overall atmosphere and support a wide range of events, the school partnered with Pro AV Systems. Together, they set out to implement a solution capable of delivering clear, consistent sound across both the field and the bleachers.
Our Solution
To meet these goals, Pro AV Systems integrated an outdoor audio system focused on coverage, flexibility, and ease of use.
Weather-resistant JBL loudspeakers were mounted on existing field light poles and carefully aimed to balance sound across the playing surface and spectator seating. This strategic placement distributes announcements and music evenly throughout the venue.
Inside the press box, a centralized audio system was installed to serve as the control hub. The setup includes a Shure wireless microphone system for referees and announcers, featuring one lavalier microphone with a Shure in-line mute switch for referee use, along with a dedicated announcer microphone to ensure clear and consistent communication during events. In addition, an Alesis mixer gives operators intuitive control over multiple audio sources, including microphones, Bluetooth audio, and auxiliary inputs. A locking rack inside the press box securely houses all equipment, protecting the system and supporting long-term reliability.
To further increase flexibility, a weatherproof input location was added on the outside of the booth. This allows staff to connect external audio sources using XLR, Bluetooth, or 3.5mm connections. As a result, users can easily adapt to different event needs without accessing the press box.
Results
With the new system in place, the athletic field now delivers clear, consistent audio across the entire space. Announcements reach every corner of the venue with clarity, while music enhances energy and engagement during games and events.
In addition, staff and referees benefit from dependable wireless communication, and operators can manage the system easily with minimal training thanks to its intuitive design. Multiple input options also give the school flexibility to support everything from game day operations to a wide range of school events.
